Encaustic wax, hand dyed tissue paper and shellac on birch board.

This dramatic waxy painting shows a striking single flower that commands attention with its vibrant textured centre and intricate details. The underlayer of this painting is tissue which has been hand dyed using a traditional Japanese Shibori style of dying to create abstract floral images. This design has then been enhanced with the addition of coloured encaustic wax to create a vibrant, colourful painting. The centre of the flower is made from richly textured wax droplets in shades of yellow, ochre and deep red. Gold highlights emphasise its depth and dimension, reflecting the sunlight streaming from the right and adding a warm glow to the composition. The petals of the flower are painted in soft shades of pale yellow and cream, emphasised by trails of burnt coloured shellac. They gracefully extend outwards over the layered background of green hues. The shades of green and blue behind create a sense of depth and contrast, making the radiant flower stand out. The combination of the textured wax, the organic shellac and the luminous layered background create a captivating and dynamic piece of art.

The surface of this painting has some texture on the flower centre, which makes it tactile. The edges of this piece are finished with the distinctive ‘shou sugi ban’ charred wood.

Note: This piece is unframed with no suspension on the reverse, so that you can mount it to suit your room décor.
