I have taken my encaustic vessels to a new level by incorporating clay and other textured materials into them. A range of these new products will be available for sale at my upcoming craft fairs. All are made with hand-dyed tissue paper mounted on canvas board then embellished with encaustic wax florals. Please read the full descriptions on my website for each one. They all have an ethereal quality and the encaustic wax provides beautiful texture and a luminous shine. Any of them would make the perfect addition to your home or could be a unique and lasting gift for that special person in your life. They are all A2 size and would be best displayed mounted in a floating frame to provide support. </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <strong> In the Studio </strong> </p> <p> <span> I have been working on developing a new style of more abstract encaustic art on hand-cut birch boards - more details to follow shortly! It is an ancient technique dating back to Ancient Egypt where it was used for painting funerary portraits for placing on mummies. </span> </p> <p> <span> It is a fascinating medium which involves using heated beeswax and damar resin, combined with coloured pigments, with each layer having to be carefully fused with a flame or heat gun. It can produce rich, vibrant colours that are resistant to fading over time. The layering of the wax adds texture and depth to the work, especially when combined with my hand dyed tissue paper. The wax can be layered and carved into, to add more complexity and texture. The final artwork is durable and has a luminous glow due to the transparency of the wax. Encaustic wax does not need to be framed under glass, instead mount it directly on the wall, or place it in an open floating frame. </span> </p> <p> <span> ‘Lacy waves’ above is available on my website and is an example of a seascape where the wax has been heavily carved to represent rock formations. </span> </p> <p> <span> I plan to make some of my smaller encaustic pieces of art available on my website for purchase, so that you can see, feel AND smell how beautiful encaustic wax art is. It is a very tactile medium! If you are unsure about committing to purchasing a larger encaustic painting, then buying a small piece like this is a great way to see what it is like. Watch out for updates on my Instagram page for the release of these new smaller paintings! </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <strong> Craft Fair May - Nature in Art </strong> </p> <p> <span> This was my first event like this and I loved every minute of it! It was very successful and I really enjoyed meeting lots of different visitors, many of whom were artists themselves. I was able to show my encaustic art and explain how I create it. This is a process called Extractionism, where I interpret my design out of the abstract visual shapes created as I dye and stick down my tissue paper. I never know exactly what composition will emerge! It’s an exciting way to create my unique art, using intuition, creativity and personal interpretation. Put down a protective mat on your surface. Place down a piece of Carnival wet strength tissue paper. Use a little water to dilute drops of blue, green, brown and pink ink into a palette. </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <strong> Step </strong> <span> <span>   </span> </span> <strong> 2. </strong> </p> <p> <span> Spray water over the tissue paper. Using a piece of sponge or foam brush sweep diluted ink colours across the tissue: darker blue at the top, then paper, then green and or brown. Add streaks of pink across the blue. Splatter some pink or red paint over the lower section to represent a haze of flowers. Dry carefully with a heat gun on low temperature. </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <strong> Step 3. </strong> </p> <p> <span> <span> Using Pritt stick or wallpaper paste, stick the tissue paper down onto the substrate and squeeze with your fingers to create wrinkles - make some abstract linear ones as if tree trunks. Let the wrinkles guide your design. Leave to dry. Trim edge of tissue from board. If using paper, you can fold the edges over and glue with Pritt stick. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <span>  </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> Rub gold pan pastel over the raised texture to create highlights. Develop the tree and bush outlines by painting on wider trunks and adding branches. Paint on darker inks on the left of the tree trunks and lighter colours including gold and white on the right - to give the effect of light coming from the right of the painting. </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <strong> Step 4. </strong> </p> <p> <span> Add more detail to your design by painting foliage, using inks, acrylic paints. or Posca pens. Sponge on shades of green paint for tree leaves or paint leaves on directly. Add more shading to the left of the tree trunks with an Aquarelle brown pencil and white highlights on the right, using Dr Ph Martin's Bleed proof white. </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> Using a baby wipe smear and rub some white paint into the sky for clouds. Optional: add birds into the sky, using a stencil or hand paint, using a dark blue or black paint. </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <strong> Step 5. </strong> </p> <p> <span> Splatter a few colours of inks or diluted acrylic paints across the lower part of the painting e.g. pink, red, white and gold - to represent abstract wildflowers. Continue to add more layers to the design until you are happy.  Once the painting is dry, gently rub on some final highlights of gold pan pastel to catch the textured tissue. Paint in abstract foliage using a acrylic ink. </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <strong> TOP TIP: </strong> <span> <span> you can always wipe off paint with a baby wipe or layer over dried ink or paint if you are not happy with your initial design. </span> </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <strong> Step 6. </strong> </p> <p> <span> Seal the final painting with Modge Podge or other acrylic sealer sealer (matt or glossy). Apply with a foam applicator or sponge. </span> </p> <p> <span> <br/> </span> </p> <p> <span> Finish the edges of your board e.g. by painting or adding gilding wax. It is painting with fire! It can be a rather unpredictable process but beautiful luminous and tactile results can be achieved. I have some waxy winter berry designs ready to add to my website, in addition to two abstract landscapes which use shellac and gold or copper leaf. The shellac is burnt with a hot flame to achieve organic celled designs - very unique. </span> </p> <p> <br/> </p> <p> <span> One of my favourite techniques is to use vibrant alcohol inks to paint a flower over layers of fused white wax, then burn shellac to create beautiful cells which reveal the colours below. This unusual form of art can then be given a highly polished finish. Encaustic artwork does not need to be displayed behind glass - they can be mounted as they are or put in an open or floating frame. It is the unpredictability of all these mediums that I enjoy the most. Encaustic painting involves melting wax and fusing it with a blowtorch, which is great fun! I love the beautiful sheen you can achieve on an encaustic painting. </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> I also create beautiful vibrant and unique hand-dyed tissue paper using a wide variety of techniques including Shibori folding, binding and wrapping, hand painting and wax resist. This is then incorporated this into my botanical paintings and seascapes, taking advantage of the texture and organic designs provided by the dyed tissue paper. </span> </p> <p> <span>   </span> </p> <p> <span> My forthcoming book will explain all about the exciting art of creating your own unique hand dyed tissue paper patterns. Ensure most of the scrunched sheet is covered with ink. If you keep the tissue wrapped up in a ball you will have some white undyed sections in the middle, which adds to the interest in the design. </span> </p> </div> <div data-rss-type="text"> <p> <span> Step 5. </span> </p> <p> <span> Set tissue paper aside to dry overnight. Lay on parchment paper.
